Favre or Rodgers: Who Ya Got?

It wouldn’t be the NFL playoffs without a little Brett Favre tossed into the conversation. He might be retired (for good this time), but that doesn’t mean the ex-Packers signal-caller can’t be compared to current Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. And according to wide receiver Greg Jennings, who played with both, if he had to choose one of the two, he’d go with Rodgers.
Leave it to ESPN radio to broach the topic. At least Jennings didn’t waffle on the question.
“They both bring different things to the table, but, honestly, right now, I definitely have to go with — you can’t take away what Brett has done — but I am gonna go with Aaron,” Jennings said.
Good answer, especially if he wants another ball thrown his way this season and beyond. Jennings expanded on his reasoning.
“His body of work at such a young age, his attention to detail, his discipline, I think it’s really second to none and I think it’s unparalleled,” he said. “And you haven’t really found a quarterback that has done it the way he’s done it. You have the young guys that are coming out and they’re making a huge impact in this game.”
Attention to detail and discipline. Hmm… So the guy referred to as a “gunslinger” his whole career lacked discipline. To be fair, Jennings played with Favre at the end of his career and is getting Rodgers in his prime. Let’s check the numbers to see how the two stack up the first four years of their careers.
Yards | TD | INT | Comp. % | Won-Loss | Playoffs | GW Drives | |
Favre | 14825 | 108 | 64 | 62.6% | 37-24 | 4-3 | 10 |
Rodgers | 17037 | 131 | 37 | 65.5% | 41-21 | 4-1 | 6 |
Based on stats alone, Rodgers takes the prize. If he continues at his present pace he’ll probably end up having the more impressive resume. However, winning Super Bowls isn’t easy, so anointing him the “greatest” at this stage of his career would be premature.
Jennings also made a relevant point about today’s NFL.
“This is a different league, it’s a pass-first league and so it’s a little different, but his attention to detail and his discipline to be perfect or so close to perfect — I think that’s really going to separate him … I am definitely going to have to go with ‘A-Rod.’ ”
Rodgers is the more precise passer, but Favre played with a couple of quality running backs in Dorsey Levens and Ahman Green. No offense to Ryan Grant and James Starks, but they don’t really compare.
There’s your weekly dose of Brett Favre. You can now take your life off pause.
