Fantasy Football: John Carney Becomes New Orleans Saints Kicker Once Again
Added on Sep 30, 2010 by Barry in
The defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints are coming off their first loss of the season to the division rival Atlanta Falcons, but they had an opportunity to win this game with a field goal that couldn’t be converted when Sean Payton needed it the most and now the Saints are in second place in the NFC South.
In the aftermath of losing to the Atlanta Falcons for the first time since 2002, the New Orleans Saints have reached out to a familiar face in veteran kicker John Carney.
At 46 years old, Carney is no longer having his phone ringing off the hook with job offers, but if there were one position on the football field that a 46-year-old could still play at and be successful it is at kicker.
Back in 1998, Carney made his first field goal in the NFL as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but that was a long time ago and now the 46-year-old is looking to just help out the team he advised last season when they won their first Super Bowl title in franchise history.
Even though John Carney will be the New Orleans Saints starting kicker against the Carolina Panthers in Week 4, Garrett Hartley is still on the current roster as the Saints haven’t parted ways with him just yet, but if Carney kicks well I won’t be surprise to see Hartley get the boot in the coming weeks.
As for fantasy football value, I believe John Carney could potentially be huge if this New Orleans Saints offense puts up big numbers against the winless Carolina Panthers next week. With the Panthers playing as bad as they have on both sides of the football this season, I could see Drew Brees and company using this as a tune up game with a very good possibility of putting up 40 or more points on the board.
If you need a kicker, even just to fill in for the bye week of your starter, Carney is a very good option and is more than likely available!
