Fantasy Football Debate: Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees?
Added on Sep 01, 2010 by Barry in
Heading into your 2010 fantasy football draft, it is never easy to pick between big-name players that are really close in comparison, but there are ways to break it down see what player can benefit you the most in the long run.
One of the closest comparisons is at the quarterback position between defending Super Bowl champion Drew Brees and up and coming gunslinger Aaron Rodgers.
Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers
Upside: In this day and age, a mobile quarterback is one you should stay away as they usually are prone to injury and tend to not throwing many touchdowns or put up big passing yard numbers, but the Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers i the exception as he is basically the entire offseason for the cheese heads.
Last season Rodgers just blew up in fantasy football terms as he had 35 total touchdowns (30 passsing, 5 rushing) and 4,750 total yards (4,434 passing, 316 rushing). With these kind of numbers, Rodgers is a fantasy stud and arguably the top fantasy quarterback in the league.
Downside: Last season the Green Bay Packers offensive line was awful as they caused Aaron Rodgers to get sacked 70 times and if that continues this season, he could be in for some injuries that could keep him on the sidelines instead of the field.
Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
Upside: Much like Peyton Manning with the Indianapolis Colts, Drew Brees has the ability to make all of his weapons in the offense that much better. Marques Colston is without a doubt in the number one guy for Drew Brees in the offense, but even if his receiving corps gets banged up, he also finds ways to put points on the board and rack up the passing yards.
Downside: With the New Orleans Saints coming off their first Super Bowl title in franchise history, every team on their schedule will be gunning for them and that could result in opposing defense finding flaws in the Saints offensive scheme. That might be stretch, but I believe that might be enough to take Rodgers over Brees.
Verdict: Aaron Rodgers
