Falcons’ Robinson, Eagles’ Jackson Injured In Nasty Helmet To Helmet Collision

There are few things in sports scarier than a helmet to helmet hit in football. It’s not even scary yet exciting–partially due to the impact, partially due to the dangerous implications to the well being of the players involved it’s just scary. Such a collision occured in the Atlanta Falcons/Philadelphia Eagles game on Sunday and while the players involved may miss a game or two the good news is that they otherwise appear to be OK.
The Eagles’ DeSean Jackson was attempting to catch a pass early in the second quarter when he was nailed hard by Falcons’ cornerback Dunta Robinson who lead with his helmet in a violent collision that left both men motionless on the field for several minutes. Both were eventually helped off and didn’t return. Robinson was flagged on the play, but both men took a licking. Jackson has already been diagnosed with a concussion and is listed as ‘doubtful’ for next weekend’s game at Tennessee. Robinson is listed as ‘questionable’ though that could change after further examination early this week.
Falcons’ coach Mike Smith gave a fairly optimistic assessment of Robinson’s condition:
“He seems to be fine. It was a very violent collision. I saw him and knew he couldn’t return, and that’s all I really know.”
Andy Reid gave a similar assessment on his player’s condition. Eagles’ QB Kevin Kolb suffered a concussion in the opening game of the season and knows full well how serious it is:
“Take it seriously because it is serious. I just felt so bad. I’m part of the play, and I never saw the guy. DeSean is a tough guy and he’ll be out there as soon as he can, we got to take this concussion situation serious.”
The situation was made all the more frightening by the similar incident in Saturday’s college football game between Rutgers and Army that has left Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand paralyzed from the waist down with a spinal cord injury.
