Dreadful Quarterback Play Plagues Week One
Added on Sep 14, 2010 by Scott in
It’s only one week, but what the hell was going on with NFL quarterbacks this past weekend? Sixteen starting signal callers tossed for under 200 yards. This list included Aaron Rodgers, Matt Schaub and Brett Favre. Now, none of those three guys are in jeopardy of losing their jobs, but some of the others on the list are continuing a disturbing trend of inept play for their respective teams. So, which quarterbacks are in the most trouble? Let’s take a look.
Not concerned
Aaron Rodgers (19-31, 188 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INT) – Rodgers is still a legit MVP candidate. He’ll still throw for 4000 yards and 30-plus touchdowns. Chalk this one up to being a little out of sync on the road against a very aggressive defense. AR will be all right.
Matt Schaub (9-17, 107 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) – The Colts runs defense was so horrifically awful, Schaub didn’t have to toss the rock. Arian Foster rumbled for 231 yards and three touchdowns. That won’t ever happen again, so expect Matty to be fine from here on out.
Brett Favre (15-27, 171 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) – Favre is an old man who once again skipped most of training camp. He’s also been a notoriously slow starter the last few years. Don’t panic just yet, even though the Vikings wide receivers are sketchy.
Mildly concerned
Donovan McNabb (15-32 yards, 171 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT) – I wasn’t anticipating much from McNabb in terms of stats in 2010. The ‘Skins are limited at the skill positions and the offensive line will have its share of bad Sundays. It will be a struggle for Donny Mac to move the ball, but as long as he avoids disastrous turnovers, he’ll be serviceable.
Jason Campbell (22-37, 180 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) – Campbell was his painfully average self, but he was far from terrible. Like his old team, the Raiders are lacking in the playmaker department. If Darren McFadden has more days like he did on Sunday, Campbell could have a decent season. However, the chances DMc stays healthy are slim at best.
Very concerned
Alex Smith (26-45, 225 yards, 0 TD, 2 INTs) – The David Carr watch is already on. Smith lacks the necessary acumen to play the position. He holds the ball too long and can’t diagnose defenses quick enough. As long as he’s under center, the 49ers will remain wannabes.
Mark Sanchez (10-21, 74 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT) – Monday night was a classic example of why the Jets are in trouble. When the running game is contained in a close game and they need Sanchez to make a big throw, he can’t deliver. At this point, he’s just too inexperienced to lead a Super Bowl contender.
Matt Cassel (10-22, 68 yards, 1 TD) – Wow. The Chiefs are paying this stiff how much? Take away Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Bill Belichick, what you have left is a journeyman quarterback who belongs permanently affixed on the bench.
Trent Edwards (18-34, 139 yards, 1 TD) – How does this guy still have a starting gig in the NFL? I feel sorry for Lee Evans, who is a pretty solid wide receiver who’s been saddled with subpar quarterbacks his whole career. Edwards would make a credible backup on a contending team, but he’s nowhere near talented enough to be a number one.
