Buffalo Bills v New England Patriots

With Chad Henne’s season in doubt after suffering a separated left shoulder, the Dolphins are scouring the free agent scrap heap for a new quarterback. The team worked out a pair of journeymen yesterday, Trent Edwards and Brodie Croyle. Neither walked away with a contract, but with Miami on a bye this week, there is no rush to bring someone aboard.

Edwards spent his first four years with the Bills before taking his “talents” to Jacksonville in 2010. in 37 career games, he has thrown for 6,019 yards, 26 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. Croyle has been on the street since being released by the Chiefs during the offseason. In 18 career appearances, he’s tossed for 1,669 yards, eight touchdowns and nine picks.

The Dolphins are also rumored to have reached out to veterans Jake Delhomme and David Garrard. Reports are both turned down invitations to try out, which tells you all you need to know about how unappealing the situation in winless Miami is.

Garrard remains at the top of the unemployed signal-caller list since being summarily dumped by the Jaguars days before the season opener. Why he’s still out of work has left many pigskin pundits puzzled. Either Garrard is looking for a role on a contender or there just isn’t much interest in a quarterback with 89 career touchdowns and 54 interceptions.

Henne’s availability for Week 6 and beyond is unknown. There are grumblings he will be shut down for the season, although nothing has yet to be confirmed. Through the first four games, he’s thrown for 868 yards, four scores and four interceptions. However, 416 of those yards came during the Week 1 loss to the Patriots.

Matt Moore took over for Henne last Sunday and appears to be the best option under center. The ex-Panther completed 16 of 27 passes for 176 yards and one interception in relief duty. In three-plus seasons, he’s compiled a 7-6 record as a starter.

Miami’s next game is a Monday-nighter on October 17th against the Jets.
