Cowboys Fire Wade Phillips

Chicago Bears v Dallas Cowboys

It took Jerry Jones long enough, but he has finally cut ties with head coach Wade Phillips after last night’s embarrassing 45-7 debacle against the Green Bay Packers. Apparently, five straight losses and two primetime face-plants in the last three weeks was more than JJ could stomach. Replacing Phillips will be offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, who was supposedly in line to be the heir apparent to the coaching throne anyway.

There’s plenty of blame to go around in Big D, but when a team looks uninspired, listless and downright bad, the head man must be held accountable. Jones’ dream of playing in the Super Bowl at Cowboys Stadium next February is gone, baby gone. With eight games remaining, all that’s left to do is pick up the shattered pieces of the 2010 season.

So, can Jason Garrett turn things around? The change may result in a surge of energy inside the locker room, but the upcoming schedule includes games against the Giants, Saints, Colts, Eagles and Redskins. Needless to say, it won’t get any easier the rest of the way.

The secondary is a mess, the run game is ineffective and Jon Kitna is showing his age. Firing Phillips was the right move, but expecting a sudden swift in attitude from a roster packed with overrated and underachieving players seems illogical. The problems within the Cowboys organization run deeper than the head coach. It might be time for Jones to take a long, hard gaze in the mirror.
