As interim coach replacing Todd Haley, Kansas City’s Romeo Crennel certainly got things off to a good start with an upset win over previously undefeated Green Bay. He knows that one game can’t be justification for getting the full time job, but he’s getting a lot of support from KC players and coaches impressed with his performance in the role.

One big Crennel proponent is offensive coordinator Bill Muir:

“The defense has started to turn the corner. It would be a shame to change that. I think Romeo’s demeanor as a football coach, he relates very well to the players, he has a sternness to him, about being a dictatorial-type of man. I just think he would do a good job.”

Granted, some of that glowing recommendation could be self serving–Muir is more likely to hang on to his job with Crennel at the helm than if a new coach comes in looking to fill his staff with his own hires. Star linebacker Tamba Hali isn’t worried about his job security, however, and he’s a big proponent of Crennel as head coach:

“I think anybody on this team would agree with me, if we can keep Romeo as our head coach here it would be great. We love what he does and his game plan and as you can see what happened on Sunday, he was able to control the clock along with our quarterback and that’s something we haven’t been able to do here in a long time is control the clock. Now to win games.”

Crennel is keeping things in perspective:

“I’ve won one game. Let’s see if we can win another, and whatever happens will happen after the season is over. The only thing I can control is my players and how we play and whether we win or lose or not, so that’s what I’m going to do.”

He does appreciate the support of his players and coaches and says that’s a reflection of the unity of the team:

“I know that I can lean on these guys any time I want to or need to, and the biggest thing that I’ve done as far as leaning on them is letting them do their job. That’s the biggest thing, because they are experienced coaches, and they know the game of football.”

The Chiefs will host Oakland on Saturday and actually have a shot at making the playoffs if they win out. Kansas City is a -2′ point NFL betting favorite in that game.
