Browns’ Delhomme Still Injured, Wallace To Start This Week

Cleveland Browns’ coach Eric Mangini is one of these guys who think he’s George Patton and that every shred of information about his team is as vital as a military secret. That’s why he’s been vague about the team’s quarterback situation. Starting signal caller Jake Delhomme was injured in Week 1 and didn’t play last weekend. Seneca Wallace got the start last weekend but Mangini even tried to shroud that in secrecy worth of the Normandy Invasion–he didn’t announce that Delhomme was out and Wallace was in until an hour before game time.
It’s more of the same this week–Magini is being vague, but Delhomme is still not well enough to play and Seneca Wallace will start Sunday’s game at Baltimore. Delhomme may miss next week’s game as well. Magini asked if Delhomme’s injury could take more than a week to recover and he tried to go all ‘these aren’t the droids you’re looking for’ on reporters:
“Could it? I think there is potential. He’s been progressively better each day. I thought he was moving around pretty good today when I saw him. With injuries, I don’t really know. Sometimes they … I don’t know.”
Since he’s not going to tell you what’s going on hoping to keep Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Ravens’ defense up nights wondering if they’ll be facing Jake Delhomme or Seneca Wallace, I’ll give you the straight scoop. Delhomme has a high ankle sprain, which takes much longer to recover from than the garden variety sprain. Recovery time from a high ankle sprain can be up to a month. He’s still wearing a protective walking boot and not only has he not returned to practice he hasn’t been medically cleared to practice. In theory, that could happen before Sunday and he could play but in this case it won’t. He’ll be re-evaluated on Monday.
As for this weekend, Seneca Wallace will start and has been taking all of the reps with the first team at practice this week. Rookie Colt McCoy is the third quarterback on the Browns’ roster and will be Wallace’s backup.
