Broncos to Work Out Manning

The number of potential destinations for free agent quarterback Peyton Manning seems to have narrowed to two — Denver and Tennessee. A Broncos brain trust that includes executive VP John Elway, head coach John Fox and a team of doctors are flying to North Carolina this afternoon to watch Manning work out at Duke University. This will mark the first step in proving the ex-Colt is healthy enough to justify a hefty contract.
Manning will reportedly work out for the Titans at a future date, although Denver appears to be his top choice. Depending on how he performs and whether or not the powers that be are impressed, the Broncos could be prepared to offer him a contract.
The most pressing issue regarding Manning’s playing future is arm strength. The nerves in his throwing arm have been slow to heal after his neck fusion surgery last September. Several NFL insiders have speculated for months that the arm will never be the same and retirement would be his best option going forward. However, Manning has asserted his arm has fully recovered and he has no intention of calling it a career. Today may finally shed some light on the mystery.
Denver boasts a solid defense, a pair of talented young wide receivers in Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas and a rabid fanbase, which are likely the reasons why Manning is leaning toward them. Manning also scratched the Dolphins off his list, informing the team yesterday he removed them from consideration.
Titans owner Bud Adams reportedly rolled out the red carpet for Manning and even inked All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson to a three-year deal as incentive. They already have Matt Hasselbeck and 2011 first-round pick Jake Locker, but the opportunity to add a future Hall of Famer doesn’t come along very often.
Needless to say, all eyes will be on Duke today. And for once it has nothing to do with the basketball team.
