The mainstream sports media–for whatever reason–hates to see Tim Tebow succeed. The latest salvo fired by bitter journalists came in a GQ magazine article about Tebow’s season in which they implied a ‘feud’ between him and his backup, Brady Quinn. On Thursday, however, Broncos’ coach John Fox dismissed talk of a rift between the two players and insisted they were tight.

Quinn was quoted in the article suggesting that Tebow leapfrogged him on the depth chart due to fan reaction, not quality of play:

“Early in the season, there was a game when Kyle got hurt and the coaches were calling for me to go in, but Kyle got up and finished the game out. So I was the second-string guy. Then, a few weeks later, they decided to put Tim in. I felt like the fans had a lot to do with that. Just ’cause they were chanting his name. There was a big calling for him. No, I didn’t have any billboards. That would have been nice.”

He also suggested that Tebow’s success had to do more with luck than skill:

“We’ve had a lot of, I guess, luck, to put it simply.”

Quinn first claimed that his comments were taken out of context, then took to Twitter to apologize to Tebow saying he:

“deserves a lot of credit for our success and I’m happy for him and what he accomplished. Most importantly, he is a great teammate.”

he added:

“I apologize to anyone who feels I was trying to take anything away from our team’s or Tim’s success this season.”

Quinn said he’s also reached out personally to Tebow to clear things up. The fact that Tebow has probably already ‘turned the page’ speaks to his maturity and leadership–a couple of qualities that are most assuredly not ‘luck’. It’s certainly in Quinn’s best interest to keep things chummy with Tebow for a number of reasons, not the least of which is his own self interest. Quinn is an unrestricted free agent and the Broncos are considering bringing him back to Denver where he’d almost certainly serve as Tebow’s backup.
