Brian Billick Interested in Dolphins Job

Normally ex-coaches turned TV analysts deny interest in coaching vacancies when asked about them during interviews. They deliver the standard platitudes and reaffirm how happy they are in their current career. Brian Billick isn’t one of those guys. When queried on Thursday about the Dolphins coaching opening, he didn’t conceal his interest in pursuing the position, if he’s approached.
Billick claims there’s been no contact between him and Miami’s front office, but under the right circumstances, he would definitely consider a return to the sidelines.
“The Dolphins are a marquee franchise. But at the end of the day, it’s the structure of what they put together… It has to be a partnership between the head coach, general manager and ownership with a very specific vision. The Dolphins are probably a long way from formulating their plans.”
The former Ravens coach went into greater detail regarding the type of situation he’s looking for from a potential employer.
“I know from my first job with [Ravens general manager] Ozzie Newsome that it’s a marriage. You’ve got to forge that relationship. … It’s going to be interesting, of all the jobs that become available because there are a few of us with the ring out there… This is a GM’s league. A GM is going to step up and say, ‘I’m going to create a relationship with a guy that has got one of those rings and that bravado and that resume, that strength of personality.’ “
Of course the “ring” he speaks of is from Super Bowl XXXV. Billick compiled an 80-64 record from 1999-2007 with Baltimore, but his last playoff win was in 2001. Since his firing in 2007, he has worked as a game and studio analyst for FOX and NFL Network.
The Dolphins have reportedly contacted (or plan to) both Bill Cowher and Jeff Fisher. The former has repeatedly said he will not coach in 2012, but the latter is willing to listen to offers.
