Brett Favre Denies Plans to Return

The 2011 NFL season wouldn’t be complete without a Brett Favre comeback story. With quarterback injuries in Houston and Chicago, it was only a matter of time before the 42-year-old future Hall of Famer’s name was brought up as a possible replacement candidate. Rampant speculation turned to ‘uh oh, here we go again’ after ESPN (of course) reported earlier this week that Favre was “open to a return” with the Bears. However, according to the man himself, he has no intentions of coming out of retirement, again.
A public relations flunky, er, I mean Favre, issued the following statement via his official website.
“In spite of reports about playing with various teams, I’m enjoying retirement with my family and have no plans to play football,” Favre said… I haven’t contacted nor have been contacted by any teams and all reports are inaccurate.”
This supports everything the Bears have been saying since Jay Cutler broke him thumb. So, case closed, end of story. Right? Probably not. As long as Chicago keeps losing and ESPN has eyes on the lawnmower man’s Hattiesburg compound, the endless will-he-or-won’t-he rumors will persist.
For now, the fading Bears will continue to roll with Caleb Hanie, who has thrown a pair of touchdown passes, six interceptions and been sacked 11 times in the last two games. Behind him are Josh McCown and Nathan Enderle. 1) how many McCown brothers are there, and 2) who the hell is Nathan Enderle? At this point, a broken down glory hound like Favre might be the best option.
Donovan McNabb is still out there. The fallen star asked for his release from the Vikings, presumably because he thought one of the quarterback-needy teams would sign him. So far, his assumptions have proven dead wrong. He might be the only person in the world, besides his mom, who believes he can still be a quality starter. This is the same guy who’s been benched for Rex Grossman and rookie Christian Ponder in the last two seasons.
Hanie and the Bears travel to Denver to face Lord Tebow on Sunday. The Broncos are listed as -3.5 point favorites.
