I realize we’re only two games into the 2010 season, but the Pittsburgh Steelers have that look. Ya know, the look of a team that has its eyes firmly fixed on playing in February. Thus far they have allowed one touchdown, (which came very late against the Titans) forced eight turnovers, recorded seven sacks and held Michael Turner and Chris Johnson to a combined 76 yards rushing. Needless to say, the defense is playing at a Super Bowl level and upcoming games versus the offensively challenged Bucs, Ravens, Browns and Dolphins will do nothing to change that.

On the flipside, the Steelers offense minus Ben Roethlisberger has been ugly through two weeks. Dennis Dixon, Charlie Batch and Byron Leftwich have or will take snaps under center. Their only offensive touchdown came in overtime against Atlanta, and the other score was the opening kickoff versus Tennessee. The rest of their points have come off the right leg of kicker Jeff Reed, who has drilled seven field goals.

Rashard Mendenhall has been underwhelming, but with opposing defenses scheming to stop him, a slow start had to be expected. Once Big Ben returns in three weeks, the passing attack should improve and in turn open up running lanes for Mendenhall. A balanced offense coupled with the league’s best defense could very well make Pittsburgh the favorites to win the AFC.

It’s still early. A lot can happen between now and January. A key injury here or there can easily derail a championship train. That being said, the Steelers have won two of the last five Super Bowls and seem poised  to launch another serious run at the title.
