It’s been a tumultuous offseason for the Detroit Lions at least where the police blotter is concerned. Cornerback Aaron Berry was the latest player to run afoul of the law when he was arrested in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on DUI charges over the weekend after he allegedly drove into parked cars. Berry is the third Lion to spend time in handcuffs since their surprising 10-6 2011 campaign ended.

Berry, entering his third season, was expected to challenge for a starting role in the Detroit secondary, but he could be punished and/or suspended for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. The Lions released the prerequisite statement expressing their disappointment.

“We are extremely disappointed in the reports involving Aaron Berry and the incident in Pennsylvania this past weekend. This is not the standard of behavior we expect from any member of our organization. We have strongly and repeatedly emphasized the need to be accountable on and off the field, which makes this incident with Aaron all the more disappointing. We will have further comments regarding this situation when appropriate.”

Berry joins defensive tackle Nick Fairley and running back Mikel Leshoure as Lions in a heap of hot water. Fairley was pinched for DUI in late May and marijuana possession in early April, while Leshoure will sit out the first two games of the upcoming season after two arrests for marijuana possession earlier this year.

Fairley notched only 15 tackles and one sack as a rookie in 2011. Leshoure missed the entire season with a ruptured Achilles suffered in training camp. Berry has 34 tackles and one interception in twelve career games.

Detroit is trying to build a culture of winning that has been absent for over a decade. Needless to say, posting bail for players is the wrong way to go about the process. In a conference loaded with contenders, the Lions can ill afford to take a step back, especially due to the careless actions of a few.
