Albert Haynesworth Still Hates The 3-4 Defense

Redskins bellyacher and sometimes defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is still talking. He’s not making much of an impact on the field, but he’s certainly been good for quotes this season. While meeting with reporters this morning, big Al proclaimed something the rest of the football world already knew. No, it had nothing to do with him being an overpaid waste of a roster spot. And it wasn’t in regards to him being a selfish malcontent and locker room virus either.
Haynesworth wasn’t completely forthright, but he did drop a dose of brutal honesty. Here’s what he said:
“I’m not good enough to play the 3-4.”
So, he’s not fat and lazy, he’s just not very talented. Thanks for clearing up the confusion, Al. I’m sure Mike Shanahan loves to hear his players admit they suck, especially the ones with seven-year, $100 million contracts.
To be fair, playing nose tackle in a 3-4 isn’t easy. Haynesworth is a pocket pusher, not a space eater. A guy with his pass rushing skills is better suited for a 4-3 scheme where he can’t be constantly double- or triple-teamed by opposing offensive lines.
Maybe they should try him at defensive end? He might be a shade too large, but when properly motivated he’s athletic enough to get to the quarterback. Although, at this point he seems like a lost cause. He’s being primarily used in nickle situations, which isn’t enough to justify his hefty salary. Barring a sudden shift in attitude, Haynesworth’s future in D.C. doesn’t look bright.
