With a couple of high profile wide receivers hitting the free agent market, namely Vincent Jackson and Marques Colston, one might think recently retired Randy Moss would be low on the list of teams with a glaring need at the position. The 49ers definitely have a hole to fill opposite Michael Crabtree, a hole that could be filled by Moss, who is scheduled to visit the reigning NFC West champs today.

The 35-year-old future Hall of Famer met with the Saints a week ago and reportedly had an “off-the-charts workout” that included a sub 4.4 40-yard dash. He is said to be in great shape and is serious about rebounding from a disastrous 2010 campaign that saw him traded by the Patriots and cut by the Vikings.

Of course the issues with Moss have never been physical. While he lacks the speed he had ten years ago, he’s still faster than most receivers in the league. However, his erratic behavior and unpredictable attitude is the reason some teams have placed a red x through his name.

He will come at a cheaper price than Jackson and Colston, which might be why he’s drawing interest from San Francisco. It’s not as if the Niners offense is suddenly going to turn into the Patriots. With a dominant defense and a potent running attack, all they need is a deep threat to alleviate pressure on Crabtree and Vernon Davis, who combined for 139 receptions and ten touchdowns in 2011.

After Crabtree and Davis, the cupboard is extremely bare. Kyle Williams caught just 20 passes and Ted Ginn hauled in only 19. Free agent Braylon Edwards couldn’t stay healthy and ended the season with a pathetic 15 catches in nine games. Whether Moss or someone else, adding a legitimate playmaker to the offense is an absolute priority.

Other teams that might give Moss a look are St. Louis, Chicago and possibly San Diego, if they lose out on resigning Vincent Jackson.
