Injured New Orleans guard Eric Gordon is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his ailing right knee later today. Gordon, who has played in only two games this season, is expected to miss at least six weeks, He first injured the knee in the season opener with what was initially diagnosed as a bruise. However, the slow recovery led team doctors to conclude surgery as an option.

Hornets General manager Dell Demps broke the news late last night.

“After consulting with our medical staff, we concluded surgery was the best route and in the best interest of Eric for the long term,” general manager Dell Demps said in a statement. “Eric is eager to return to the court and we are confident Hornet fans will get to see him soon.”

Gordon was the key arrival in the trade that sent All-Star point guard Chris Paul to the Clippers. New Orleans also received center Chris Kaman, small forward Al-Farouq Aminu and a future first-round draft pick. Thus far none of the players acquired have had much of an impact. Kaman has started only seven games and is averaging 10.5 points, his lowest total since the 2006-07 season, and Aminu is netting 5.0 points in 19 minutes a night.

Without Gordon, point guard Jarrett Jack is having a career year with 15.2 points and 6.7 assists, although he himself is recovering from a bruised knee that has caused him to sit out five of the last six games. New Orleans has the worst record in the Western Conference at 5-23, and the second worst overall behind the 3-25 Bobcats.

Gordon averaged a career high 22.3 points and 4.4 assists in 2010-11 and was thought to be entering his prime when he was shipped to the Hornets in the Paul deal. However, this marks the third straight season he will be sidelined more than 20 games. Since his rookie campaign in 2008-09, he has missed 72 of 192 games.
