The persistent back spasms that prevented Bulls point guard Derrick Rose from suiting up the last two games has prompted him to see a specialist later today to diagnose the problem. Rose has been dealing with pain and discomfort since late January, but was able to play through it prior to yesterday. Until he receives the doctor’s orders, it’s unclear when Rose will return to the lineup.

Rose, who struggled walking in recent days, has a history of back issues dating back to high school.

“The first time I remember [the back problems] happening were in high school,” Rose said before the game. “But college I didn’t have it. First couple of years [in the NBA] I didn’t have it. All of a sudden it just happened now. Hopefully, [Monday] I’ll meet with some people and try to figure something out.”

The 23-year-old reigning MVP has been a picture of health for the first three years of his career, missing only six regular season games. Since February 4th, when he netted 26 points and dished 13 assists in a 113-90 victory over Milwaukee, he’s played a total of only 33 minutes.

He leads the Bulls in scoring and assists. His 7.8 dimes per game ranks seventh in the NBA.  Without him in the lineup, backup C.J, Watson has taken control at the point. In twenty games this season, he is averaging 10.4 points and 4.3 assists per night.

Along with Rose’s troubles, Chicago has dealt with ailments to several key players, including free agent addition Rip Hamilton, Luol Deng, Taj Gibson and Joakim Noah. Ironically, the oft-injured Carlos Boozer has yet to miss a start, a season after sitting out 23 games. However, his 15.4 scoring average is his lowest since his second year in the league.

The Bulls lead the Eastern Conference standings with a 23-7 record. They begin a six-game homestand tomorrow night against Sacramento.
