College Basketball Betting Picks: West Virginia @ Connecticut
Added on Feb 22, 2010 by Jack Thurman in
With sports betting sites offering only two main board college basketball betting opportunities today obviously there’s not a lot to choose from, but we’ll take a position on the Big East battle between West Virginia and Connecticut. West Virgina is near the top of the Big East table but UConn has struggled in conference play despite their overall solid 16-11 record.

This game opened with West Virginia a -1 road favorite and that’s been bet up to -3. On one level, the line move in understandable based on the Mountaineers superior Big East conference performance but on many levels its hard to figure. Neither team is a pointspread juggernaut, though West Virginia is a very good road team with a 9-3 SU mark (6-6 ATS). UConn is a decent home team as well, however, with a 13-3 SU record. The line movement could also be a case where the public is betting the ranked team over the unranked team which is about as good of a handicapping strategy as throwing your money in the street.
We’re going to play against the line movement here. This is a big game for UConn who is likely ‘on the bubble’ for a NCAA Tournament bid and could definitely strengthen their case with a win over a top 10 opponent. The Huskies have dominated the series historically, with a 9-3 SU/8-4 ATS mark and that improves to 5-0 SU/4-1 ATS at home. Finally, its a simple rule of fundamental handicapping that winning as a favorite on the conference road is hard. We’ll look for UConn to pull the upset tonight.
