The Lakers much-needed win over San Antonio last night was marred by yet another injury to center Andrew Bynum. The brittle big man went down in the second quarter with a hyperextended right knee and is scheduled to undergo an MRI today to rule out any further damage. His availability for the Lakers opening round playoff series this weekend remains a question mark.

Bynum, who has played in 54 games this season, has been on a tear for two months, recording ten double-doubles since March 8. His prowess on the glass has given L.A. a potent inside combo alongside power forward Pau Gasol. He’s averaging 11.5 points and 9.5 rebounds.

However, Bynum’s  history of knee problems should raise a red flag among purple and gold loyalists. He underwent surgery on the same right knee last summer, which caused him to miss the early part of the season. Head coach Phil Jackson believes Bynum will be okay after a few days of rest, but it’s no guarantee.

Bynum has played more than 65 games only once since entering the league in 2005. When healthy, he gives the Lakers a legit inside threat offensively and a solid low post defender. He was a key part to their championship run in 2010. A longterm absence would leave a significant hole in the lineup.

With the regular season finale tonight against Sacramento, the Lakers are holding onto the number two seed in the West. Their first round opponent is yet to be determined.
