White Sox Lose Adam Dunn To Appendectomy

White Sox designated hitter/first baseman Adam Dunn’s season just hit a bump after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix. Dunn left last night’s 7-6 loss to Kansas City in the 12th inning and found himself on the operating table a few hours later. He is expected to travel back to Chicago after this afternoon’s game with the Royals. The Sox play their home opener tomorrow against Tampa Bay.
Dunn, 31, inked a massive four-year $56 million contract with the White Sox last December after bouncing around the National League for three years. In eleven major league seasons, Dunn has a career average of .250 and has belted 354 home runs. So far in 2011, he is hitting .286 with one homer and five RBI.
It’s unclear exactly how much time Dunn will miss, although a timetable of five days has been set. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel underwent an appendectomy on December 8, 2010 and was able to return to action eleven days later.
Juan Pierre will fill in at DH for today’s game, but Mark Teahen is another possible replacement. The White Sox currently sit at 2-2 in the AL Central, 1.5 games behind the Royals.
