The Boston Red Sox’s Dustin Pedroia has already experienced what it feels like to come back from an injury too early and end up right back on the bench. He made that mistake earlier this year.

Although Pedroia denied reports that he would undergo surgery on Friday to place a screw in his previously fractured left foot, he announced to today’s locker room media swarm, “I think that putting the screw in is probably the best idea.”

Pedroia will have a CT scan on the injured foot early Friday morning to see if surgery will be necessary, but the 2008 American League MVP made it clear that he would rather sacrifice the rest of this season and make a return to second base in 2011.

“I don’t want to get January and go through my workouts and not feel good and then I miss some of next year.”

If Pedroia’s CT scan reveals that the injury will require surgery, the procedure will take place “later in the day.”
