Sometimes the best strategy for a handicapper is the old fashioned approach of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ If something has worked in the past unless there’s a fundamental change in the matchup or the prices involved there’s no reason to not keep doing it. That’s the situation with today’s game between the Cubs and Brewers. As we discussed yesterday, the Cubs have dominated the Brewers in head to head play. Following Wednesday’s victory, the Cubs have won 6 of 8 from Milwaukee this season including 4 of 5 at Miller Park. Over the past three years, the Cubs are 14-7 +8.2 units on Milwaukee’s home field. The Brewers have been a horrible home team this year posting a 9-17 record for -11.5 units.
Were this series not lopsided enough as it is, today’s pitching matchup looks to be very favorable for the Cubs. Ryan Dempster doesn’t have a great won/loss record this season though he checks in with a serviceable 3.76 ERA. Dempster has dominated the Brewers throughout his career with a 13-2 record, while his team has a 14-5 record against the Brewers in his starts with a 3.18 ERA. Dave Bush, on the other hand, has been hit hard this year with a 4.97 ERA. In his last three starts, he’s averaged only 3.8 innings per start with a 7.94 ERA. Bush is 2-9 with a 5.60 ERA in his career starts against the Brewers, and the team is 3-14 in those games. The Cubs are 2-9 in his starts this year, and at the price we’ll look for the Cubs to continue their dominance.
