Erik Bedard Hits The DL

The Seattle Mariners are down a starting pitcher. Lefty Erik Bedard hit the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a sprained left knee. He’ll miss at least one scheduled start, but the impending All-Star break might work in his favor if Seattle shuffles its rotation. He last threw on Monday versus Atlanta and allowed three runs on four hits.
Bedard has been dealing with discomfort in the knee for a couple weeks, so manager Eric Wedge decided the best course of action was to put him on the shelf to avoid further damage.
“We knew he was feeling a little something after his last start and has been working through it since then,” Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. “We put him on the 15-day DL and we hope it is not much more than that.”
On the year, Bedard is 4-6 with a 3.00 ERA in 15 games. In eight major league seasons, he has compiled a 55-47 record in 156 starts with a 3.67 career ERA. To fill the roster spot, Seattle recalled catcher Jose Yepez, who was hitting .296 for Triple-A Tacoma.
The 32-year-old Bedard is no stranger to the disabled list and significant injuries. He sat out portions of 2008 and 2009 with arm ailments and missed the entire 2010 season rehabbing a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder. He is currently pitching on a one-year incentive laden contract.
From 2004-2007, while a member of the Orioles, Bedard made 111 starts and went 40-34. Since being traded to the Mariners in 2008, he has managed only 45 starts.
Seattle has been largely carried by their stellar staff in 2011. They rank fifth in baseball with a team ERA of 3.25 and their eight shutouts are tied for fourth. They’ve been so good reigning AL Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez is fourth among starters with a 3.35 ERA.
The Mariners are 39-42, four games behind division-leading Texas in the crowded AL West.
