The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered an early season setback last night after starting shortstop and leadoff hitter Rafael Furcal broke his left thumb sliding into third base in the 6-1 victory over the Giants. He will likely be placed on the 15-day disabled list and could be out up to four to six weeks.

Furcal was already nursing a left wrist strain that kept him on the pine for two games. Needless to say, luck doesn’t seem to be on his side this April.

“It’s bad,” an obviously frustrated Furcal said. “I’m trying to get back in there after being out for two days, and as soon as I come back, I break my finger.”

The 33-year-old has dealt with seveal nagging injuries throughout his twelve seasons in the majors. The former NL Rookie of the Year and two-time All-Star has a career average of .285 with 950 runs scored and 294 stolen bases. Ironically, the injury occurred while he was stealing third.

In six years with the Dodgers, Furcal has amassed 105 steals and hit .300 or better three times. In seven games in 2011, he is hitting .192 with four runs scored and one stolen base. L.A. is currently 6-4 and in second place in the NL West. Minor league prospect Ivan DeJesus is the favorite to fill the void in the infield.
