Baseball Betting: Washington Nationals at Milwaukee Brewers
Added on Jul 28, 2012 by Jack Thurman in
The Washington Nationals have spent most of the summer atop the NL East but now they’ve got some company as the Atlanta Braves have cut their advantage to a mere four games. The Nats will try to pad their lead in the division on Saturday as they play the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. The Brewers are in the midst of a disappointing season and are 14 games back of NL Central leading Cincinnati.

The Brewers took the opening game of this weekend series in impressive fashion, dispatching the Nationals 6-0. Milwaukee’s Michael Fiers continued to pitch well and the Brewers teed off on Nationals’ southpaw Ross Detwiler. The pitching matchup should be much more advantageous to the visitors on Saturday. Washington will start Jordan Zimmerman–he may not get the publicity of Steven Strasburg but he does have the best numbers on the staff. Zimmerman has a 2.31 ERA overall and a 2.08 ERA on the road where the Nats have won 7 of his 10 starts. His recent form has been even better–in his last three games he’s allowed only 12 hits and 1 earned run for a 0.50 ERA in that stretch.
Milwaukee will start veteran lefthander Randy Wolf who has not been particularly sharp this year. Wolf has a 5.46 ERA overall and a 4.86 ERA at home. The Brewers have lost 13 of his 19 starts including 6 of 11 at home. Washington has been effective against left handers this year with a 16-12 record. Milwaukee, meanwhile, has lost a ton of money against right handed pitching–against RHP are 32-41 -15.7 units. Worth noting that the Brewers have an excellent record against Washington at Miller Park going 7-1 since 2009. This season the teams have split two games at the venue so there’s a good chance that Milwaukee’s home dominance has more to do with Washington’s struggles on the road prior to this year than any sort of intrinsic advantage. Even with last night’s victory the Brewers have lost 7 of their last 8 games and face a very unfavorable pitching matchup on Saturday. Zimmerman has been almost unhittable lately while that can’t be said about Milwaukee’s Randy Wolf. We’ll gladly back the better team and the vastly superior pitcher at a reasonable price.
