Baseball Betting Preview: Milwaukee Brewers at Philadelphia Phillies

The Milwaukee Brewers go for an improbable sweep of the mighty Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday afternoon and we’ve got a baseball betting position on this game. Milwaukee is 9-8 on the season and tied for first place with Cincinnati in the NL Central. The Phillies are currently in first place in the NL East and lead Florida by 1/2 game.

The Phillies are a huge ‘public’ team and although they’re a very good team that should be in the mix for postseason honors this year they’re overpriced more often than not–and particularly at home. When one of their ‘A list’ pitchers are on the hill bettors have to pay even more of a premium to back the Phillies and that’s the case today as lefthander Cliff Lee gets the call. The Brewers will counter with their own talented southpaw, Chris Narveson and he’s actually been in much better form than his Philadelphia counterpart. Lee has a 4.19 ERA although the Phillies have won 2 of his 3 starts. The Brewers have somehow lost 2 of Narveson’s three starts despite a very impressive 1.45 ERA.

We respect the Phillies success in daytime games this year–a perfect 6-0–but with Narveson putting up such good numbers we’ve got to take the big price with Milwaukee. Philadelphia has had some success against lefthanders so far this season but that was a big weakness last year–Phillies lost -13.45 units at home against southpaws despite a 54-30 overall record at Citizens Bank Park. For whatever reason, the Brewers have given Philadelphia trouble at home over the past couple of years. Milwaukee is now on a 5-3 run at Citizens Bank Park and this may be the best Brewers team in several seasons. Potential lookahead spot for the Phillies as they’re getting ready for a long West coast road trip that’ll begin in San Diego on Friday. We’ll take a huge price with the plucky Brewers and their talented lefthander on the hill. We’ll also monitor the Phillies performance against lefhanders and see if they start to struggle against portsiders as the season progresses–if so, we’ll take advantage of it.
