With the Kentucky Derby behind us we’ll get back into baseball betting action starting with a busy card for Tuesday.  The Los Angeles Dodgers will take on the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second of a four game set on Tuesday.  The Dodgers having a losing record on the campaign but are still within striking distance of the divisional leaders in the NL West.  The Pirates have been playing decent ball of late and are creeping up the NL Central table.

The Dodgers are kind of a mess at the moment both on and off the field.  Off the field, their finances are in disarray in the wake of the messy divorce/ownership battle between Frank McCourt and his ex-wife.  On the field, they haven’t shown any sort of consistency or direction in the early part of the season.  They’ve got a decent team batting average but are near the bottom of the MLB table in runs scored.  They’re also #23 in team ERA at 4.30 per game.  Pending the outcome of Monday night’s series opener with the Pirates they’ve lost 6 of their last 8 games.

It’ll be awhile before the public develops any love for the Pittsburgh Pirates after their dismal performances of the past few seasons but this is a team headed in the right direction with a ton of young talent throughout the roster.  On paper their pitching staff is an area in need of some upgrading but that being said they’ve performed reasonably well this year with a  3.61 ERA good for the #11 ranking in all of baseball at the moment.  They’re not hitting the ball particularly well–their .235 batting average is #24 in the MLB–but that’s an area of the game we expect to see improvement on.  Most importantly, perhaps, under new manager Clint Hurdle this Pirates team believes they can actually compete on a daily basis.  Kevin Correia’s line this season is somewhat strange–he’s pitched well with a 5-2 record and a 2.91 ERA but at home he’s 0-2 with a 7.59 ERA.  We just don’t have any confidence in this Dodger team at the moment and like the value on a team that typicaly exerts a good effort.  Pirates are 6-2 +5.1 units against LHP this year and Dodgers starter Ted Lilly isn’t in particularly good form.
