Baseball Betting Mid Season Losers

In the previous article, we looked at which teams have made the most money for baseball bettors through the midway point of the 2012 season. In this article we’ll look at the other side of the equation with the biggest baseball betting money losers.
Obviously all of these teams have losing records, but the biggest money losers are teams that are disappointing relative to their pre-season expectations. A team that was expected to be among the worst in league won’t accrue as big of a deficit as a team that was *expected* to be a contender before the season but instead has been a profound disappointment. That’s a perfect place to begin this list with a team that has so far trounced the competition for the dubious distinction of ‘biggest money loser in baseball’:
THE LOSERS:
PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES: In this metric of ‘most units lost’ there’s just no competition through the midway point of the season–the Philadelphia Phillies are running away with this dubious distinction. Philadelphia has lost a whopping -25.15 units which is nearly 10 units more than the second biggest loser in Major League Baseball. Philadelphia is a ‘perfect storm’ of baseball losses–they’ve got a lot of big name pitchers like Cliff Lee that are struggling. They were expected to be a divisional contender before the season began but instead have slumped to the bottom of the NL East. And they’ve got a popular ‘brand name’ among casual fans. There’s not much reason to expect a turnaround after the break and for now at least linesmakers and the public still have problems pricing this team.
COLORADO ROCKIES: The Rockies have been a mediocre team for several years, but they’ve been struggling to reach even that level this season. One of their biggest problems has been an inability to win at home. To date, the Rockies have amassed -15.85 units of losses. They’ve been equally bad at home and on the road and their pitching staff has been horrible. The market is well aware of the team’s losses but there may be more opportunity with this team going forward.
MILWAUKEE BREWERS: They may not be as big of a disappointment as the Phillies, but the Brewers have lost -13.20 units for baseball betting enthusiasts this season. Last year Milwaukee was a good home team and a bad road team–this year they’ve been a mediocre home team (22-21) and a bad road team (18-24). This is a team that went on a late season run last year and could do the same this year. Proceed with caution.
