Gary Russel vs Jason Jones

Golden Boy Promotions and AEG’s acclaimed monthly series “Fight Night Club” returns on October 28 at L.A. Live’s Club Nokia as it features the return of series regular Gary Russell Jr.

This months event will mark the third appearance of Russell (12-0, 9 KOs) this year as he took part in the June and July installments earlier this year when we defeated both Rodrigo Aranda and veteran Mauricio Pastrano, respectively, by knockout. He’s set to take on another fighter familiar to the series in the upset-minded Guadalupe De Leon.

Russell, who was born in Washington DC, first embarked on his professional journey in 2009 after the conclusion of a highly successful amateur career. Trained by his father, Gary Russell Sr., the duo have gotten off to a great start by stopping all but three of their opponents inside of the scheduled distance.

Russell’s consecutive knockout streak of seven fights dates back to December of last year when he stopped Rodrigo Ramiro in the third round of their bout in Minnesota. The last fighter to go the distance with Russell was Noe Lopez whom Russell outpointed over the course of four rounds according to all three ringside judges.

Russell’s most recent fight took place in Tunica, Mississippi where he needed just short of three minutes to dispose of the game but outclassed Willie Villanueva.

Despite a less than impressive of 8-11 with four wins coming by way of knockout, Guadalupe De Leon looks to turn his luck around against Russell in the six-round featherweight attraction.

De Leon’s last “Fight Night Club” outing resulted in a close majority decision loss to Charles Huerta. At the end of six rounds judges David Denkin and Max DeLuca scored the bout 59-55 and 58-56, respectively, in favor of Huerta while Raul Caiz Sr. had the fight even at 57-57.

After getting off to a solid 4-0 start to his career back in 2002 things would go sour as he dropped two of three bouts to another young Texan in Alejandro Garcia. De Leon would bounce back with two wins against Isidro Silva and Sergio Mendez before things would get downright ugly.

Following the Mendez decision win, De Leon went on to lose seven consecutive fights before getting back into the win column with a split decision victory over the previously unbeaten Derrick Wilson in December of last year.

The Wilson fight stands as his last win to date as he went on to the aforementioned bout with Huerta which was most followed up most recently by his unanimous decision loss to hot prospect Ronny Rios on the Vazquez/Marquez IV undercard at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

Golden Boy Promotions is offering free admission to the first 100 fans that arrive in costume for the October 28 event. As of now, no official announcement has been made regarding undercard bouts for the Fox Sports Net televised fight card.
