The Palm Restaurant in Times Square played host to yesterdays press conference to announce the awaited rematch between current WBC Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez and former welterweight king, Paul “The Punisher” Williams.  Martinez and Williams previously squared off last December with Williams taking the hotly contested split decision.

The Goossen Tutor and DiBella Entertainment promoted event will take place at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on November 20.

One thing that both fighters have in common is that they have at some point been viewed as “high risk, low reward” types of guys, even after they had added championships to their resumes.

“No one wants to fight Paul Williams, and no one wants to fight ‘Maravilla’ Martinez, so we will fight each other.  And everyone that doesn’t want to fight us has a good reason to not want to.” Martinez would go on to state, “there is a good reason for us to fight again; it is a fight that everyone wants to see.  We will try to do again what we did before.”

I know he is going to bring it and I am going to bring it.  For the whole 12-rounds, or 4, or 5 or 1, however long it goes.  There is going to be a lot of action and I can’t wait to get in the ring to do it again,” Williams added.

Considering how close the first fight was and that there are more than a few who feel that the decision could have easily gone in favor of Martinez, not to mention the fact that they wasted no time setting the pace and each put the other on the canvas, it’s safe to say the average boxing fan has been looking forward for these two to lock horns again.

As for Williams, this fight being signed must be doubly satisfying as he not only gets the chance to prove to the world that the close decision in the first go-round was the culmination of him having an off night, but he also gets the chance to become a five time champion in three different weight classes.

Says Williams, “this is the biggest fight out there except for Mayweather and Pacquiao, and they’re not fighting.  So the next biggest one is me and Martinez.  I am going to be in the best shape of my life like I always am, and I am going to win.  I know there is a lot of stuff out there that he may have won [their first fight in December ‘09], and it was a close fight.  I know it’s my job to make sure everything is all right.”

“He’s got something I want.  He’s got those belts on the table.  I want those belts on the table.  It’s my job to go out there and get them.  You are going to see a whole lot of explosives this time,” The Punisher also stated for the assembled media.

No matter who you felt won the first fight, whether you agreed with Pierre Benoist’s score off 119-110 in favor of Williams or if you concluded that the bout was going Martinez’ way, one thing that fans will not likely be disputing is that they look forward to the fact that they no longer have to wait to see both Martinez and Williams in the same ring, ready to do battle one more time.
