An already significant bout just got a whole lot more important for Robert Guerrero when he clashes against Vicente Escobedo on November 6 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Guerrero was recently ranked in the lightweight top spot by the World Boxing Organization.
Guerrero, the former three time world champion is currently wrapping up training camp in his hometown of Gilroy, California for his upcoming HBO televised bout with Escobedo. Guerrero is trained by his father Ruben, who feels that Guerrero is entering this fight in the best shape of his life.
“Roberts looking great in sparring. He says he feels real comfortable at lightweight. Together we’re working hard and I can see the improvement on everything we’ve been doing. His timing is right on and I expect a great performance from him on fight night.”
Guerrero first challenged for a world title back in September of 2006 when he retired Eric Aiken after eight rounds to pick up the IBF Featherweight championship. He would make his initial defense against Mexico’s Orlando Salido just two months later. At the end of 12 rounds it appeared that Guerrero had suffered the second loss of his career with a one sided decision loss, but after Salido tested positive for steroids the result was later changed to a no contest with the title officially being declared vacant.
Guerrero kicked off 2007 with a fight in Denmark against Spend Abazi for the title that he was recently stripped of. Guerrero was declared the victor in the ninth round as referee Mark Nelson deemed Abazi unable to continue, and with the win Guerrero became a two time featherweight champion.
Guerrero went on to defeat Martin Honorio and Jason Litzau with impressive stoppages and looked to be on a roll before he was sidelined for nearly a year stemming from contractual disputes between former promoter Goossen-Tutor and his current representative in Golden Boy Promotions.
In August of last year, Guerrero traveled down to Texas to take on Malcolm Klassen in an attempt to win his third major world title in two different weight classes. After 12 hard fought rounds all three ringside judges gave Guerrero the nod thus giving him the IBF’s Super Featherweight Championship.
Guerrero never made a defense of the title as his next two bouts took place above the 130 lb. division beginning with eighth round knockout over Roberto Arrieta in April and more recently, in what some could argue the biggest win of his career, a unanimous decision win over Cuban great Joel Casamayor this past July.
Now Guerrero sets his sights on fellow contender Vicente Escobedo in a bout that could very well have title implications for the victor.
“The winner of this fight puts himself in a great position to challenge the winner of Marquez vs. Katsidis for the WBO world title. I understand that this is my golden opportunity to take my career to the next level and shoot for my forth world championship. Escobedo, I believe, is going to be in the best shape of his life. That being said, I’m mentally and spiritually going to give everything I got to get prepared for this fight. Training camp has been hard, but I feel great,” Guerrero explained.
