A press conference is to be held later today by Star Boxing and Main Events to announce a December 9 fight between former cruiserweight champ, Tomasz Adamek as he receives his latest heavyweight hurdle in the form of the always exciting Vinny Maddalone at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
The upcoming fight with Maddalone will mark the sixth time in the past eight bouts for Adamek that have taken place at the Prudential Center in Adamek’s adopted home of New Jersey. Over the past couple of years Adamek has amassed a legion of loyal of Polish followers who, when ringside, are affectionately known as “The Sea of Red”.
Maddalone, who hails from nearby New York, is hoping his band of followers will be crossing state-lines to show their support and attempt to level the playing field outside the ring as he tries to disarm Adamek inside of it.
“As soon as the fight was mentioned, I just knew we had to put it together,” stated Joe DeGuardia, CEO of Star Boxing and long-time promoter of Maddalone. “I can only imagine what the atmosphere is going to be like in that arena come December 9th. In one corner you have Tomasz who is practically worshipped by his Polish fans, and has been adopted in his home state of New Jersey, and in the other you have Vinny, who has spent his entire life living in Queens, and who packs the house with Italians each and everytime he steps into the ring.
“The Polish and Italians are real boxing fans, and the fighters are real blood and guts fighters, come fight night everyone will be able to witness that. This is going to be a highly entertaining fight that should have the feel, both in and out of the ring, of the glory days of boxing when fans packed the house to see two real warriors slug it out,” DeGuardia determined.
Adamek’s Promoter, Kathy Duva, agreed with DeGuardia that the December bout will be filled with energy, both inside the ring and out.
“This is going to be a fun fight with plenty of action,” stated Duva, CEO of Main events. “Vinny will bring a big following of his own to the Prudential Center and we know the Polish People will be out in force for Adamek. Both fighters’ non-stop action styles compliment each other in such a way that the fight can’t help but be a non-stop slug fest from bell to bell.” Maddalone is never the type of fighter to shy away from a challenge, and with his aggressive come forward style he makes it nearly impossible to see him in a bad fight.”
For Adamek, a former light heavyweight and cruiserweight world champion, this will be the fifth time entering the ring in the heavyweight division. His initial appearance came just under a year ago as he participated in a clash with former title challenger Andrew Golota. The fifth round TKO in favor of Adamek solidified him as the greatest pugilistic force to ever come out of Poland.
His most recent heavyweight endeavor took place against another recognizable name of yesteryear in Michael Grant. While Grant made it to the final bell, unlike Golota, Adamek did enough throughout the fight to earn a clear cut decision on all three judge’s scorecards.
Now Adamek looks to defend his IBF International and WBO NABO heavyweight titles against Maddalone.
“I had some free time but now I am back in training,” stated Adamek. “I will have a lot of preparation before the fight with Vinny on December 9th. Vinny has many American-Italian fans and I’m hoping they come to cheer him on. I think this will be a great fight and a great night for boxing fans.”
On the other hand, Maddalone looks to derail the Adamek express in what will no doubt be a fight that will add to the string of exciting matches the Queens native has already taken part in.
While his heart and excitement that Maddalone brings with him each and every time he enters the squared circle doesn’t come into question, his ability to defeat top level opposition certainly does. Maddalone has been handed a defeat each time he has tried to step up the level of competition in the past three years with recent losses to former cruiserweight king, Jean Marc Momerk, top heavyweight contender Denis Boystov, and a third round TKO loss to the legendary by well past his prime Evander Holyfield in 2007.
A win for Maddalone over Adamek changes all that and places him in serious contention for a high ranking and a possible title shot in the future.
“As soon as Joe called me and told me about the fight, I told him to make it happen,” stated Maddalone. “I have studied and admired Adamek for years, and I have nothing but the up most respect for him as a fighter and as a person, but come fight night I am going to be looking to go to war. This is going to be one hell of a fight, that much I can assure you. You have two very determined fighters who aren’t afraid to go toe-to-toe and leave it all on the line, and as a true fight fan what more can you ask for?
” A win over Adamek puts me right in line for a title shot, something that I have waited my entire career for, and I am going to put every ounce of energy and everything I have in me to be victorious come December 9th.”
