Gary Shaw Productions Signs Junior Middleweight Prospect Julian Williams

It only took two professional fights for Philadelphia’s Julian Williams (2-0, 2 KOs) to get picked up by a major promoter as Gary Shaw Productions recently announces their acquisition of the undefeated slugger.

Just over a week ago at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California Gary Shaw promoted a recent Showtime televised event with Williams on the non-televised portion of the undercard.

Clearly, Shaw liked what he saw as the Philly prospect disposed of Dean Peters Jr. in just 24 seconds.

“He is the goods. He is 100% the goods and I couldn’t wait to see his debut with us last week. He had the crowd on its feet within seconds of the bell to start the first round,” said Shaw. “I’ve worked with a lot of world champions throughout my career and I still enjoy promoting world championship events, but nothing compares to grooming a young professional – watching him progress and earning his stripes. I suspect Julian will stoke my enthusiasm for boxing for a very long time. He is going to make Philadelphia proud.”

Combined, the first two bouts of Williams’ professional career have lasted less than a minute and a half combined as, in addition to Peters Jr., it took Williams exactly one minute to do away with Antonio Chaves Fernandez last May in the City of Brotherly Love.

As far as people that are high on the former amateur standout, Shaw isn’t alone as veteran matchmaker John Beninati added, “Julian reminds me of a better version of Andre Berto. He has a more powerful punch. He’s got all the tools.”

Considering that, since his professional debut nearly four years ago, Andre Berto has compiled an impressive record of 26-0 and currently holds the WBC Welterweight Championship, the 20 year old is expected to do great things in the near future for not only himself, but Gary Shaw Productions as well.

“I’m very excited to be working with Gary Shaw,” said Williams. “I know he will keep me very busy in the ring and that’s all the incentive any good fighter needs to train hard.”

To say that Shaw and his clan will keep him busy is pretty much spot on considering that, despite being in the ring just under two weeks ago, Williams is slated, barring any sort of injury, to make two more trips to the squared circle before the year is out.

His next scheduled prize fight will take place on November 9 in Oklahoma City before he heads back out west to the Chumash Casino Resort on December 3.

With head trainer Kenny Mason by his side, Williams amassed an impressive amateur record of 75-10 and had a banner year in 2006 as he took home the bronze in the Golden Gloves National Championship, the Silver Gloves nationals and the Golden Gloves state championships. Prior to, as well as following that remarkable run in 2006, the two found success at various levels in the amateur game, and look to keep the momentum going as professionals.

Just as Gary Shaw did earlier this month, trainer and mentor Kenny Mason clearly saw something special in the then homeless Williams when he took him in nearly seven years ago at the age of 13.

Soon enough, I suspect, the rest of the world will get a glimpse of what Shaw and Mason already know.
