Following a fight, win or lose, most fighters choose to kick back for a bit and rest up both mentally and physically. However, Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez isn’t resting on his laurels instead opting to cross the Atlantic to assist former WBC Super Middleweight king Carl Froch for his upcoming title fight against Arthur Abraham.

Rodriguez (17-0, 13 KOs) is fresh off a ninth round TKO win over James McGirt Jr. in Showtime’s latest installment of their Shobox: The New Generation series which featured a triple-header featuring the sport’s rising stars in the super middleweight division. While watching the Dominican Slugger impose his will on the game McGirt one couldn’t help but be impressed and wonder just how long it would be before the youngster joins the top tier combatants at 168 pounds.

While it won’t be in an official capacity, the time is now for him to get a taste of sharing the ring with an elite super middleweight.

Rodriguez will take his heavy hands to the United Kingdom for a week and a half in order to help Froch with his upcoming Super Six World Boxing Classic bout against Abraham for the recently vacated WBC crown.

Traveling abroad for sparring sessions is hardly a new experience for Rodriguez as we previously reported here on SportsBettingWorld.com that, while preparing for his most recent clash, he spent time in Australia partaking in sparring sessions with some of the most talented Aussie super middleweights. It’s an experience that members of Rodriguez’ team feel helps establish their charge as one of the greatest in the United States.

“Edwin’s fight against McGirt legitimized claims for him being the No. 1 super middleweight in the country, if not the world,” Rodriguez’ manager Larry Army proclaimed. “Sparring in Australia was an eye-opening experience for Edwin, who was over there with a top fighter (Geale) in the middleweight division.

Army added, “Sparring Froch, who was a world super middleweight champion, is invaluable for Edwin because he’s trying to get where Froch has been and remains. He will be able to measure himself as a fighter and man against Froch and that experience is priceless. Froch’s people wanted Edwin as a sparring partner because he’s an explosive puncher like Abraham.”

Showtime’s current World Boxing Classic tournament is a testament as to how much talent exists in the 168 lb division. Last Friday night’s Shobox event proved that there is just as much talent coming from the next wave of young fighters vying for their respective spots at the top.

Prospects like Marcus Johnson and Aaron Pryor Jr. fought alongside Rodriguez last Friday evening and made it clear that he won’t have to look very far for stiff competition.

But with the work he’s putting in right now, Rodriguez looks to be separating himself from the pack of young and hungry fighters while making a home for himself alongside the best the division has to offer.
