Heavyweight Vinny Maddalone Appears to Be On Track For Tomasz Adamek

For Flushing, Queens heavyweight pugilist, Vinny Maddalone, being included in the division’s elite has, so far, remained elusive. He expects to change that next month when he takes on the ultra popular Tomasz Adamek at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
“I am very grateful that I got this fight against Adamek. I have worked so hard throughout my entire career to get a shot at the title, and a win over Adamek puts me right there,” Maddalone recently stated during an open workout for the local media.
He’s been on the verge of breaking through on a few occasions, but each time he stepped up the level of competition, he was sent crashing back down.
Back in March of 2007 Maddalone received the biggest opportunity of his career when he signed to fight the legendary, but well past his prime, Evander Holyfield. Unfortunatley for Maddalone, Holyfield turned back the clock and stopped the younger combatant in just three quick rounds.
His next step up came a year and a half later when he traveled to Germany to take on impressive contender Denis Boystov who ended up taking a lopsided eight round unanimous decision. Maddalone most recent step up in class was almost identical to the Boystov bout when he crossed the pond to take on Frenchman Jean Marc Mormek who also dealt the Italian-American warrior a loss via eight round unanimous decision.
As displayed during the open workout yesterday, Maddalone is treating his December 9 clash with Adamek as the biggest fight of his career.
“I feel great, this is the best training camp I have had in my entire career. Everything has been great and coming right along. My weight is where I want it to be, and I feel very strong. I have had tons of sparring in this camp and it’s really showing off,” claims Maddalone.
He added, “I have really enjoyed working with Nirmal, he has me working really hard and from day one he has told me he doesn’t want to change me in that I am a pressure fighter, he wants me to apply a lot of pressure in this fight, but smart pressure. He has me working off my jab and focusing on my footwork and making sure I keep myself balanced. I’m not telling you that you are going to see a brand new Vinny Maddalone come December 9th, but you will definitely see some different things out of me, and I believe these things are what are going to propel me to victory.”
As he mentioned, Maddalone is known as a pressure fighter who is no stranger to fight of the year performances. Maddalone’s relentless attack paired with Adamek’s crowd pleasing style should make for a can’t miss bout that Maddalone feels he is compeltely ready for.
“I am going to start fast, and like I said earlier, I want to put a lot of pressure on him, but smart pressure. Adamek is a high intensity fighter who throws a lot of punches, I plan on matching that. We are expecting him to move a lot and box from the outside, but if he decides he wants to turn it into a slugfest, then great, I’ll be right there with him.”
He may have come up short in the past, and victory over Adamek next month is no guarantee. If Maddalone does get bested by the Polish slugger it won’t in any way be because he didn’t come prepared.
He’s well aware that he’s in for the fight of his life.
