Footballs weren’t the only things flying through the air in the Ravens-Dolphins game on Sunday. According to ‘Phins linebacker Channing Crowder, saliva was too. Specifically, saliva from the mouth of Ravens fullback Le’Ron McClain aimed squarely at Crowder’s face. The NFL has rounded up its official spitting investigation unit to look into the accusation.

McClain admitted to a close range confrontation with Crowder, but has denied any malicious intent:

He said stuff to me I didn’t want to hear. I said stuff he didn’t want to hear,” McClain said. “Spit came out of my mouth when I said something to the dude, and that was it. It wasn’t on purpose. I’m not that kind of player.”

Hey, we’ve all been there. You’re chatting with your bro and all the sudden a fleck or two of spit hits him in the mug. It’s embarrassing, but it happens. However, a video review of the incident clearly shows McClain cocking his head back and launching it forward, followed by Crowder waving his hand as if to intercept the loogie.

Crowder’s teammate Karlos Dansby summed up the humiliation of being spat upon without an ounce of hyperbole:

“As a man, you spit in somebody’s face, you crossed the line,” Dansby said. “Where I’m from, that’ll get you killed, straight up. That’s around the world, period.”

Death seems like an extreme punishment, but different strokes for different folks. In all seriousness, spitting on someone is cowardly and just plain rude. I don’t blame Crowder for being upset. Should the allegations be confirmed, McClain would likely face a fine and possibly a suspension.

It’s a case of he said, he said at this point. Dolphins coach Tony Sparano believes McClain to be guilty. Meanwhile, Ravens coach John Harbaugh stands by his player 100%. Sounds like a job for Judge Judy.
