NFL football betting this weekend takes us North of the border to the Rogers Centre, usually the home field of the CFL Toronto Argonauts.  It’s technically a home game for the Buffalo Bills, and they’ll host the talented but erratic Chicago Bears.  Buffalo has struggled badly this season as evidenced by their 0-7 SU record, but they’ve shown some improvement in recent weeks.  The Bears are 4-3 but have looked downright awful at times–perhaps the low point being a horrible Sunday night football loss to the NY Giants that saw starting QB Jay Cutler sacked 9 times in the first half.

The Bills are a mess and I’m not sure that Chan Gailey is the guy to clean it up.  He does have some talent to work with–Ryan Fitzpatrick is the only quarterback in the NFL with better SAT scores than mine (he went to some school called ‘Harvard’ that’s supposed to be pretty good or something) and guess what–he’s a very intelligent, heady quarterback.  He’s probably not a ‘quarterback of the future’ but he’s a solid, competent veteran presence and there’s something to be said for that.  Running back CJ Spiller out of Clemson has the talent to be a future superstar, though he’s probably a year or two away from being a consistent NFL back.

Unfortunately, the bad far outweighs the good in Buffalo.  The defense is awful, ranking #29 in total defense and dead last in rushing defense.  Their pass defense ranks respectably, but that’s likely due to opponents focusing on the vulnerable rush defense.  The secondary isn’t very good either–Buffalo has allowed 15 touchdown passes this year while intercepting only one.  The Bills’ D played tough at Kansas City last week in a losing cause, and that game sets up an emotional letdown situation for the stop unit–as well as the entire team.

Chicago is off a bye week and we like the idea of Mike Martz having two weeks to prepare an attack against a bad defense.  Jay Cutler hasn’t been getting good pass protection this season, but the Bears OL should be good enough to give him time to work against the Bills’ pass rush.  Cutler’s protection should improve with the return of Roberto Garza from injury.  The Bears aren’t a great pointspread team and we respect the Bills 10-5 ATS record after 2+ SU losses but the price looks right for what is essentially a neutral field.
