Former Welterweight Champion, Zab Judah, touched down in New Jersey this weekend as the final week kicks off before his 12 round skirmish with the heavy handed Argentine, Lucas Matthyse, for the NABO junior welterweight strap at the Prudential Center in Newark.
The bout serves as the main attraction of Saturday’s HBO: Boxing After Dark telecast.
Judah, along with his traning staff, will wind down the final leg of their training camp at the Body Shapers Gym in Teaneck while the rest of his team will be making sure the business side of the show has all of its kinks ironed out as Zab’s Super Judah Promotions is a co-promoter of the upcoming show.
Bill Halkias, VP Super Judah Promotions said, “Super Judah Promotions is excited to be part of an exciting night of boxing that includes what will be a night of fireworks between Zab Judah and Lucas Matthysse. Zab was very well aware of what he needed to do in training camp to get his 40th victory. He looks stronger and sharper than ever. ”
“Actions speak louder than words and at this point in Zab’s life he chooses to allow his actions to speak for him. Please join us on November 6th at The Prudential Center in Newark and be part of history as Zab makes a bold statement on his way back to dominating the junior welterweight division.”
In addition to the bold statement he looks to make in the ring, his ring entrance come Saturday night appears to be just as interesting as his friend, “Iron” Mike Tyson, will be accompanying him in his final moments before the bout.
The former undisputed heavyweight champion added his support, “I watched Zab in the gym a few days ago and he looked spectacular. Better than I’ve ever seen him before. I will be at The Prudential Center sitting front and center to support my friend Zab.”
Judah, who celebrated his 33rd birthday last Monday, is making another run at a world title in the 140 lb. division after nearly six and a half years as a welterweight. After turning pro over 14 years ago, Judah spent the first seven of of them as a junior welterweight where he enjoyed much success in becoming a two time champion in the division. He defeated Jan Piet Bergman for the vacant IBF title via fourth round knockout in 2000.
He held the crown for nearly two years before succumbing to a jaw dropping knockout to former unified champion, Kostya Tszyu in late 2001.
Judah regained his championship form the following year when he picked up the WBO junior welterweight belt with a split decision over veteran Demarcus Corley. Judah made one defense of his title before vacating it in order to move up in weight.
After seeing his share of ups and downs in the welterweight division, Judah now continues his 140-pound journey as he takes on one of it’s biggest punchers in Lucas Matthysse.
Judah recently stated, “I’m excited to be back in Newark. I want to show my fans what a well prepared Super Judah is capable of. I’ve been training harder than ever for November 6th. I’m focused and in the best shape of my life. I want all my fans to join me at the Prudential Center. I promise it will be a night to remember. GODSPEED!”
While Judah has received mixed results in recent years as a welterweight, one shouldn’t forget that when the ultra talented Brooklynite is completely focused he can be a terror at 140 pounds.
Just as he stated, he has the goods to deliver a night to remember.
Unfortunately for Matthysse, it could result in a night he’d soon like to forget.
