It looked like it was going to be a long night for the Washington Capitals when the Calgary Flames were able to score 44 seconds in the game. Calgary seemed to control the next ten minutes as well, and managed to put another one past Neuvirth. The Caps were able to get on back when Backstrom put one in the goal, and thats where the wheels came off… for the Flames!

I’m not sure what Caps coach Bruce Boudreau said in the locker room between the first and second period, but he needs to be saying that before every game. The Caps came out in the second period and scored six unanswered goals. Including two goals by Alex Ovechkin that were 12 seconds apart.

See it here:

That was only the beginning! The Capitals went on to score 4 more goals in the second, and were able to completely handle the Flames. Ovechkin commented “All the time I’ve said we have the skills, I think we have more guys with the best skills in the league and sometimes we just haven’t used it, We try to be too casual and tonight’s game we played pretty good.”

Ovechkin got the scoring going on the power play, and Coach Boudreau agreed. “The power play started going and the guys were feeding off of that.” He continued “I knew they were excited about playing with each other, When we got the power-play goal and Nicky and Mike Knuble and Semin and Alex were all in on the play, I thought, “OK, something good is going to happen. When they scored on the 5-on-3, I said, ‘OK, I’ve seen this picture before.’ They could probably have had a few more. They were feeling good today.”

Flames Coach Sutter was happy how his team played in the first, but was obviously upset with how bad things got back in a hurry. “We actually played a real good first period, as good of a period as we’ve played all year,” Sutter said. “When you put a team like that on a 5 on 3 you’re in dangerous territory and they certainly capitalized on it. We took some bad penalties and they nailed us for it. “

In the 7-2 final score, The six goals were the most by any team in a period so far this season. The seven-goal outburst matched the most goals by a team in a game this season.
