Brett Favre No Longer Wearing ‘Walking Boot’
Added on Oct 29, 2010 by Jason Kearney in
Brett Favre is no longer wearing the almost comically oversized walking boot that he used as a dramatic prop in his weekly press conference. To hear much of the mainstream sports media tell it, he shed the boot and immediately walked on water. In reality, its a pretty good sign that he’s going to try to play on Sunday despite not having practiced this week (he missed practice again on Thursday). He’s been upgraded to ‘questionable’ on the NFL injury report. Our guess is that he’ll at least start the game no matter what shape he’s in physically so that he can keep his consecutive games started streak alive.
Lest we miss the fact that Favre’s foot is jacked up, he’s still wearing a heavy wrap on his foot and walking with what sure looks to be an exaggerated limp. When asked if he thought he’d be able to play on Sunday he gave one of his usual nonsensical replies:
“I wouldn’t put anything past me, to be honest with you.”
I’ll skip the obvious joke that “Jenn Sterger and Mrs. Favre both concur”.
Vikings’ coach Brad Childress sounded like a man resigned to the fact that Favre would start regardless of whether its the best decision for the team. Word around the campfire is that he’s against Favre starting:
“He’s been a little better every day. Whether it’s good enough to play in an NFL football game remains to be seen. Just have to take it a day at a time.”
Tight end Visante Shiancoe is obviously in awe of ‘The Gunslinger’:
“That’s legendary, honestly. Let’s be real: 291 games straight. First thing that comes to my mind is, of course, I’m a little jealous. That’s something that wows me as well.”
“I’m pretty sure it’s important to him. But I know that the team’s welfare is more important to him. I’m pretty sure he’ll make the best decision for the team.”
Shiancoe then qualified his statement:
“It’s going to take the sky to fall for him not to go out there.”
Vikings’ offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell would be surprised if he doesn’t play:
“Surprising would probably be a good word. He’s never not been out there, so it would probably be a surprise.”
We’ll have some indication based on Friday’s practice–if Favre participates, even on a limited basis, you can be fairly certain he’ll play on Sunday. Even if he doesn’t, we expect to see him start if for no other reason than to keep his streak alive.
