Tony Romo Breaks Collarbone In Cowboys’ Loss To Giants

As if things weren’t already bad enough in Dallas with the team having won only one game this year, they got worse on Monday Night–no mo’ Romo. Starting quarterback Tony Romo suffered a fractured left clavicle in the second quarter of Dallas’ 41-35 home loss to the New York Giants. The initial diagnosis is that he’ll be out six to eight weeks, but with only 10 weeks left in the regular season there’s a good chance that he’s done for the year. He’ll have additional tests on Tuesday, but here’s Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones’ take on the situation:
“We’ll see if surgery is required. If not, he’s going to have some time out. [Troy] Aikman was out four weeks with this and our [trainers] initially think six [weeks], possibly as long as eight [weeks], but we’ll see what his examination is.”
Things were going reasonably well for the Cowboys at the time of Romo’s injury, leading 10-7 and appearing to be in control of the game. They unraveled badly after Romo left and the Giants went on a 31-10 run to take a 38-20 lead heading into the final quarter. Dallas did make a run in the fourth quarter but has been so often the case this season it fell short.
Romo recounted the injury, which occurred on a hit by Giants’ linebacker Michael Boley:
“I tried lifting my shoulder and it hurt like heck, but I was like, OK, it will just keep getting better. The adrenaline of the game will allow me to [play], it’s my left shoulder, I don’t need to use it too much. I will figure out a way what I can handle when I’m out there, but that was before I knew it was broken.”
“I just couldn’t move without it really being painful in the shoulder. I was just having a hard time just breathing. … At a certain point you’re like, OK, then something is wrong — I just know I’m not myself. It’s disappointing when you’re in that situation.”
Romo has been a very durable quarterback, and in 2009 became the first in Cowboys’ history to be on the field for every offensive snap. He was replaced by 38 year old Jon Kitna who put up decent numbers the rest of the way throwing for 187 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions.
