Time To Face Facts

Jerry Jones’ dream of seeing his beloved Cowboys play at home in Super Bowl XLV is fading fast. After being drubbed by the rival Giants on Monday Night Football, and losing quarterback Tony Romo for possibly the remainder of the season with a broken clavicle, the ‘Boys find themselves with a 1-5 record and staring up at the rest of the NFC. Safe to say, Dallas is done.
So much for the best laid plans. A sluggish September start gave way to what amounts to a horrifying October. I guess Halloween came a week early for “America’s Team.” Couldn’t happen to nicer bunch of guys. No, really, I mean that sincerely. Wait, I’m an Eagles fan — I’m grinning ear to ear while doing cartwheels and singing “Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey, Good-bye.”
In all seriousness, the guys with the stars on their helmets still possess one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, even with Romo sidelined. Jon Kitna won’t conjure images of Frank Reich or Jeff Hostetler, but he’s had success in the past and has a gifted set of receivers at his disposal. That’s the glass half full outlook.
The glass half empty forecast is nothing but doom and gloom. And to be honest, that’s the way it should be. This team lacks discipline, intelligence, passion and leadership. They refuse to commit to the run, are guilty of numerous mental lapses in all three phases of the game and are “led” by a spineless yes man for a head coach who is nothing more than a obedient lap dog to a megalomaniacal owner.
Until Jones stops meddling in areas he knows nothing about — like talent evaluation and coaching — the Cowboys will continue to be an underachieving team. If the venerable Bill Parcells couldn’t get it done in Big D, why should we believe someone on the level of Wade Phillips can do it?
Jones has become more hands-on in recent years and for the most part makes all the major decisions. Hey, it’s his franchise, he can do what he wants, but when was the last time you saw Bob Kraft telling Bill Belichick how to do his job? When was the last time Dan Rooney delivered a morale boosting speech in the Steelers locker room? When was the last time Tom Benson held a press conference to talk about the state of the Saints?
It’s easy to blame Wade or Romo or offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. Each is worthy of criticism. However, the real problem in Dallas isn’t the players or coaches. The real problem is the guy signing the checks.
