Tampa Bay Releases Stevens Following Drug Arrest

Here’s some advice for aspiring NFL players–driving around acting like a gang banger blasting tunes with your ‘boomin’ system’ and blowing blunts isn’t a good idea in any circumstance. It’s an even worse idea if you’re a marginal contributor on a bad team and you’re doing this the night before a game. In either scenario, its not going to turn out well if you get arrested but at least if you’re a good player the team may pause before cutting you loose.
Tampa Bay tight end Jerramy Stevens is now *former* Tampa Bay tight end Jeremy Stevens after the Bucs released him on Monday morning. He didn’t play on Sunday against St. Louis and the local media had already read between the lines and suggested that he could be released based on this comment from GM Mark Dominik:
“It was extremely disappointing news to hear (Saturday) night. Obviously, Jerramy isn’t going to participate in the game. We’ll deal with it as an organization on Monday.”
So now Stevens is unemployed after a year or so of producing very little on the field and with a long rep as a trouble maker in addition to this most recent beef. Here’s how the St. Petersburg Times ran down his rap sheet:
Stevens has a history of alcohol-related arrests, including a 2007 conviction for extreme drunken driving in Arizona that resulted in a league suspension and a 30-day jail sentence. It marked his third alcohol-related arrest and came with stiffer penalties because of his high blood-alcohol content. Stevens was initially accused of marijuana possession in that incident, but the charge was not pursued by prosecutors.
During his time at the University of Washington, in 2000, Stevens was accused of sexual assault but was not criminally charged after a lengthy police investigation.
In other words, not exactly a guy NFL teams will be rushing to take a chance on. The beneficiary of Stevens’ bone headed move will likely be practice squad tight end Ryan Purvis who is expected to be promoted to the official roster.
