Golden Boy Promotions Signs Eric Morel To A Promotional Contract

It was officially announced today that Golden Boy Promotions added bantamweight champ Eric Morel to their ever growing stable of fighters.

“Boxing fans know how good Eric Morel is and the amazing thing to me is that he’s been able to maintain that excellence for so many years,” said Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar de la Hoya. “He was a terror at flyweight and now he’s doing the same thing at 118 pounds. We’ve got some big plans for Eric.”

Morel is scheduled to participate on the undercard of Showtime’s upcoming bantamweight tournament this December in Mexico. An official opponent has yet to be named.

The 35 year old veteran made his professional debut 14 years ago at the Texas Station in Las Vegas where he knocked out Jose Luis Auilar in three rounds. Morel reeled off 17 wins before outpointing Victor Burgos over 12 rounds to earn the IBA Super Flyweight Title.

After defending the relatively unknown IBA strap a handful of times, Morel moved down in weight and challenged Sornpichai Kratingdaenggym for the WBA Flyweight title. Morel achieved the second title of his career with a one sided points win.

In 2003 Morel suffered the first defeat of his pro career when dropped a 12 round decision to Lorenzo Parra in his native land of Puerto Rico.

He quickly bounced back with a decision win over veteran Jesus Rojas and in doing so obtained the regional WBO NABO flyweight title. After one successful defense, Morel moved back into the bright lights of a world title bout against Martin Castillo in an attempt to regain the WBA title he had relinquished to Parra two years earlier.

Unfortunately for Morel, Castillo prevented him from finding any sort of rhythm as Morel was nearly shutout over the course of the 12 round bout.

Following the loss to Castillo, Morel stepped away from boxing for nearly three full years.

His 2008 comeback bout against Felipe Almanza resulted in an eight round points win in favor of Morel. In August of that year Morel faced Heriberto Ruiz in a 12 round affair for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Bantamweight title. After flooring Ruiz in the third round, Morel cruised to a points win and officially made a statement that he was back.

His most recent bout was a close split decision win against popular Filipino Gerry Penalosa back in February. Morel escaped the evening with a close split decision win making him the interim WBO Bantamweight king. He now looks to build upon the success he’s had so far in his comeback and looks to do so with the help of the folks at Golden Boy Promotions.
