Good Sheldon, Bad Sheldon (Videos)

After watching the NFL’s video explanation of the differences between legal and illegal contact, I think I have a relatively good grasp on what will draw a penalty. Current Browns and ex-Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown has a reputation as being one the league’s soundest tacklers and biggest hitters. Using two of his most famous hits, let’s breakdown what’s allowable and what isn’t.

First up, Sheldon’s playoff decleating of Saints running back Reggie Bush. I’m calling this Good Sheldon.

Note how Brown leads with his shoulder, not his helmet. The initial contact is with Bush’s chest, not the head or neck. This hit should still be legal.

Next up, Sheldon’s missile blast on Rams running back Steven Jackson. I’m calling this Bad Sheldon.

Okay, Brown still leads with his shoulder, but launches himself high and delivers the blow to Jackson’s neck, hence the separation of helmet from head. Even though Jackson pops up unharmed, he’s still a defenseless receiver, and his helmet hurtling through the air just looks bad. This shot was not flagged in 2008, but it will be now.
