Reid Hasn’t Ruled Out Vick For Atlanta Game

You really have to wonder how Andy Reid ever got a reputation as a good NFL coach.  Michael Vick continues to recover from his rib injury suffered against Philadelphia several weeks back, and everyone expected that Kevin Kolb would start again this week.  No problem there.  Yet despite the obviousness of the Eagles’ quarterback situation Reid is still teasing that Vick could start against the Falcons despite the fact that he hasn’t returned to practice yet.

Here’s what Reid had to say about the situation:

“He’s still recovering.  He started to lift some, but he’s not throwing. We’ll just see how he progresses. Kevin will take the reps at practice.”

Even suggesting that Vick could play is stupid on so many levels.  First of all, assuming that the Eagles’ view Vick as their #1 QB–and it sure looks like they do–there’s no reason to rush him back to practice and risk re-injury.  Furthermore, suggesting that this is an option does nothing but undermine Kolb–as if he needed any more ‘undermining’ by the team.   Kolb was solid as a rock last weekend against San Francisco passing for 253 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions.  Maybe he thinks he’s getting a tactical advantage by leaving open the possibility that Vick could return, but that’s stupid in itself.

The Eagles did get some good injury news as defensive tackle Broderick Bunkley won’t need surgery on his injured elbow.  At least Reid didn’t suggest *he* could return this week:

“Originally, it looked like he needed surgery. After the doctors met it was decided, let’s give him an opportunity to rehab, brace it up and give him some time. It’s a stretch for him to go this week, but we’ll see from there.”

The Eagles have had 11 players miss games due to injury, which gave defensive tackle Mike Patterson a chance to lobby against the proposed extensition of the season to 18 games:

“Crazy, isn’t it? Maybe they’ll rethink that extension [of two regular-season games] to the season.”

Despite Reid’s comments, no one is expecting Vick to play this week.  His status remains ‘doubtful’ on the NFL injury report.
