Kevin Kolb: On the Bench, or On the Block?

Kevin Kolb was injured in week one of the NFL season, just a half into his expected future 8-10 years as the teams focal point and build-around player. His back-up, former All-Pro Michael Vick came in, and played well. Kolb was ruled out for the following game.

And Vick took advantage. He lead the team to a win with an extremely impressive game both stat and explosive-wise. And just a few days later, coach Andy Reid chose Vick to be his starter….for the rest of the season.

So what does that mean for Kolb? Is he merely just on the bench, or something more?

Yepp, I think he’s definitely on the block. And while Andy Reid has come out and said that he still is a “huge Kevin Kolb fan” and that he would have been “set up to fail”, there is no question that this relationship took a major hit, one that I’m not so confident in that can be fixed completely.

Vick is the guy for the rest of the year, but if he leads this team to the playoffs and beyond, which they are expecting or else they wouldn’t have benched their “franchise quarterback”, you can’t expect the team to just let him walk after the season. Therefore, what do you do? Re-sign hin to a lengthy deal and keep Kolb and his huge contract for 3-4 years? That doesn’t make much sense either.

And, if the team waits until the off-season to move Kolb, the market will be much lower. Teams interested like the Vikings, Browns, Bills, Jaguars, and Raiders will be more excited about draft prospects like Ryan Mallett, Andrew Luck, Jake Locker, and others, and be more interested in younger options.

In this past off-season, teams were more interested and offered more for Kolb than McNabb, according to reports. So if the Eagles got a 2nd rounder for McNabb, I can only imagine what they got offered for Kolb. But maybe we’ll find out soon. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Vikings, Bills, Jaguars, or Browns offer a 1st rounder for Kolb and a 3rd and 5th rounder soon, and it’d be hard to pass on that for the Eagles.
