Hopefully Andy Reid is paying attention and taking notes–this is how you run a pro football team.  Rex Ryan ended speculation on Wednesday by ruling all world safety Darrelle Revis out for Sunday’s road game against the Miami Dolphins.  Revis had aggravated an already troublesome hamstring in last Sunday’s win over the New England Patriots.  The hamstring had caused him trouble at practice last week, and after Revis said that his ‘speed wouldn’t kick in’ on a coverage play against Randy Moss he sat out the entire second half.  Revis had made comments earlier in the week about trying to play, but Ryan put the longterm well being of the team first.  And unlike his Philly counterpart who has suddenly become as wishy washy as a lovelorn junior high school girl, we don’t look for Ryan to change his position on the matter.

Revis is an easy guy to take shots at due to his holdout during training camp, but once the deal is done he’s a guy you love to have on your team.  Not only is he arguably the best in the league at his position, but to use a well worn sports metaphor he’s ‘a warrior’.  An MRI on Monday revealed that Revis had a strained hamstring and he’s been at the Jets’ training facility 12 hours a day since getting treatment.  Here’s his latest update on his condition:

“I’m feeling good I’m progressing every day and it’s getting better every day.”

Translated–’unless they have to amputate, I’m playing’.  That’s the attitude you love to see in NFL players, but Ryan had the good sense to shut Revis down for at least one more week:

“He’s itching to get back but it’s too risky of a proposition to put them out there. And that’s what we decided.”

Revis is disappointed that he won’t play, but will keep working the rehab:

“I’m disappointing my teammates I want to be out there with them but I can’t. I’m going to take my time and get back 100 percent and then I’ll be out there playing with them.”

Asked if it might take more than a week to fully recover, Revis responded:

“I have no clue man. Like I said I’m getting better every day and it feels good but we’re going to take time.”

With Revis out, Warren Cromartie will move from the other side of the field and fill his position.  Rookie Kyle Wilson will rotate into the starting lineup as well.  Cromartie’s primary challenge this weekend will be covering the Dolphins Brandon Marshall, an opponent he knows well:

“I’m definitely looking forward to that matchup. It’s my ninth time facing him, so we know each other well. I’m just looking forward to the challenge.”

On the other side of the ball, Jets’ wide receiver Braylon Edwards has been practicing with the team and will play despite his DUI arrest earlier this week.  He’s being held out of the starting lineup as an apparent punitive gesture but according to GM Mike Tannenbaum will play ‘at the discretion of coach Ryan’.
